Asian food can be a nervewracking experience for a coeliac so I was somewhat dubious, but after a welcoming glass of champagne on arrival I was prepared to be surprised, and the staff had a strong understanding of my needs and supplied me with a fair selection of plump, hearty, dim sum and could have adapted many of the dishes for me. But you don’t need to worry about any of that because you must ignore everything else and order the duck.
So let me tell you about the duck, you won’t need anything else, for heaven’s sake order the duck. The duck comes in two servings. First, it would never have occured to me to eat crispy, melting duck skin with brown sugar, but my word what a treat. I’m sure my arteries were inwardly groaning, but I could have had more of this. Along with this was more typical style shredded meat with accompaniments. The staff kindly brought me some fresh crisp lettuce leaves to roll instead of pancakes which was a nice contrast with the succulent meat. The second serving was stir fried with ginger and spring onions – kindly soy-sauce free to accomodate me and highly satisfying.
For the main event I had some firm fresh prawns, but this was somewhat irrelevant – next time I’m just ordering the duck again. Twice.
